Baucus Health Care Bill Abortion Amendment

Tuesday, September 29th, the Senate Finance Committee will vote on amendments to the Baucus Health Care Bill.  These amendments are being introduced by Senator Orin Hatch to ensure that the bill will not cover abortion and will protect the conscience laws for health care workers.

While there are 13 Democrats and 10 Republicans on the committee, we have identified six senators as the ones most likely to swing the vote to support life.  We encourage you to contact as many of these senators as possible and encourage them to vote to support the Hatch amendments to protect life.

Once you have contacted the senators I encourage you to log into our online tracking system to let us know how your contact went and what response you received.  This information will be very valuable in the fight to protect life from conception to natural death.

Talking Points:

  1. Be courteous, a caller who is respectful and polite will make a greater impact than one who is angry or belligerent.  Your call will most likely be answered by a member of the senator’s staff whose job is to record what you are calling for and your opinion on the issue.

  2. Tell the staff member you are calling because you know the Senator is on the Finance Committee and that the committee is voting on Senator Hatch’s amendments to the health care bill regarding abortion.

  3. Many times the staffer will be reluctant to record your opinion if you are not from the Senator’s state.  If you encounter this, remind the staffer you are calling about the Finance Committee meeting where not every state has a senator present.  In this situation the senator represents more than just his home state.

  4. Ask the staff member to remind the senator that the President Obama, in his address to the nation on healthcare, promised that the plan he wanted would not cover abortions and urge the senator to vote in accordance with this promise.
