Before you confirm FCC Commissioners...
Below is an email that I sent to Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) through an AFA action alert, interestingly, after having recently spoken with the FCC directly!
In one such action alert, The AFA provided a suggested opening:
"Broadcasters should be held accountable for how they use the public airwaves. As owners of the broadcast airwaves, I expect you to only confirm FCC Commissioners who will vigorously enforce decency standards on the broadcast airwaves. Before you confirm any FCC commissioners, please consider what is truly in the public’s best interest. Any nominee for the FCC must have an unwavering commitment to upholding and enforcing the broadcast decency law."

I spoke personally with Brenda ( 717-338-2727 ) at the FCC and was told that the FCC could not do much about a 2pm Saturday showing of "Family Guy" unless people called in about that particular time and show ...and only if there were a lot of complaints! I was told that the FCC's "hands" are basically "tied" when it comes to how the courts distinguish what is decent and offensive material! Apparently George Carlin's "7 Dirty Words" are now up for speculation on how and when they are used, and whether or not they are offensive! Not to mention the programing that comes on the air after 10pm, that would make the models of "Victoria Secret" Blush!
By the way, all of this programing that I am speaking about comes over the rabbit ears in my home, Not Cable or Satellite!
I was also reminded that after approximately 50, 000 calls about the Janet Jackson "Wardrobe Malfunction", that it didn't help anyway! How discouraging! Besides, what kind of regulation puts the tax payer to work monitoring everything on TV, instead of stopping offensive material prior to it pouring though our TV's in the 1st place? I agree that Parents have the responsibility to monitor what their children are watching and what they themselves are watching, but why be a prisoner to material that must be "constantly monitored" at home, before or after 10pm, that is personally offensive to the majority of Americans and their families?
If the FCC department is so weak and ineffective... then it should be removed and save us the Taxpayer dollars! Otherwise, let's choose FCC Commissioners that know how to get things done and then give them the resources to do it!
PS - Watch a Family Guy episode and then let me know if you would let your kids watch as they speak about sodomy and the like...
Lets pick people that know how to regulate properly... please! Thank You!
Respectfully,
DebtFreeBuddy, An American Taxpayer
